It's Tindy Time! (Plus an A-Bab Update)

To contact us Click HERE
Today I started Tindamax, used by Lyme-Literate docs as a cyst buster. When Lyme Bacteria dies (thanks to Doxycycline, another antibiotic or herbal remedy), it spins off into a cyst, which can regenerate later. So, you can't just kill the bacteria. You have to 'clean up' with a cyst buster, like Tindamax (or Tindy, as Lymies often refer to it.)` I only take it for three days and I pulse it ever other weekend, so that the 'bugs' (aka Lyme bacteria) don't get wise and hide. The fact that it is only 3 days every other week should also tell you something about it. It's a BEAST. Most doctors have you take it Friday, Saturday and Sunday so that by Monday, you can function...hopefully.

Fitting It In
I am a stay-at-home Mom who 'moonlights' as a yoga instructor. OK, not really MOONLIGHTS. I teach three classes...Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evenings. So, I need to be able to function every day of the week. I have two small children who rely on me to keep them safe and entertained every day and three days a week, a group of people trust me to lead them through a safe, relaxing practice...which they are paying me for. So, I started it today, Thursday, in hopes that if it DOES effect me in a not-so-friendly manner, I will be functional enough to leave the house and lead a zen-inducing class on Sunday evening.

The Lyme Juggling Act
Now, adding in Tindamax and the herbal remedy A-Bab, which I started last week, to my already busy pill-taking schedule is quite challenging. There are many rules, such as 'take your supplements no less than two hours before and after an antibiotic' and 'do not take your antibiotics together' and 'never take your antibiotic on an empty stomach' and 'sit up for 20 minutes after this one or you'll throw it up...and everything else in your stomach.' So, now I have an alarm set every two hours from 8am till 11pm  to take one thing or the other. It is a big juggling act, as one Lyme friend told me recently.

Tindy comes with another BIG rule: "Don't have any alcohol...not even mouthwash for three days before AND after!" my friends and pharmacist warned. So, what happens if I do mix this Tindamax with alcohol, even a little bit? Bad nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and severe tremors, to name a few. And if you happen to mix Tindamax with alcohol AND disulfiram (another drug, which I am not thankfully not taking), "a severe mental disorder can occur." No alcohol...check.

The First Dose
Today I had the pleasure of having coffee with some other moms. While there, my Tindy alarm went off. I was just explaining about my treatment and the number of antibiotics and supplements I was taking. "This is the first time I'm taking this one," I said, "and it's supposed to be a pretty bad one." One Mom responded, "Maybe we should toast to it, then!" Good idea. :) Down the hatch. CHEERS! I swallowed it down with a swig of decaf coffee at the great new French cafe one of the Moms had recommended. I know, decaf coffee is a no-no. Any kind of coffee, actually. *SIGH* Well, so far, so good, but major herxing doesn't usually kick in right away. I'll keep you posted.

*A-Bab Update:
I started A-Bab on the 21st. You may remember, my last post said my experience thus far (only 2 doses) was 'uneventful.' Well, the funny thing about Lyme is, the symptoms don't always stand out as, well, a symptom. One of my longest running symptoms and sometimes the most debilitating, is anxiety. The last few days have been like one big anxiety attack...air hunger, chest constrictions, teeth-grinding, insomnia, shaky hands, heart palpitations, inability to focus, paranoia, etc. It makes sense. A-Bab treats Babesia and one of the symptoms of Babs is, you guessed it, anxiety! Well, at least we know it's working! It is such an odd feeling to be happy when I feel worse! Such a crazy journey this Lyme treatment is!

But, you don't LOOK sick!

SourceAsk anyone with Lyme Disease and they will tell you...it is hard for people to understand what we are going through, because...well, we don't look sick. At least not usually. Honestly, it doesn't bother me. I mean, if I'm going to feel like crap, I'd rather not look like it too. But, it does make it difficult, because on a day when I am in pain, fighting a sinus headache, having a major anxiety attack, experiencing short of breath, have intestinal cramps, feel like I'm walking through mud, can't focus on any one thing for more than 30 seconds due to brain fog and feel like I need a cane just to hold me up...people think I'm fine. It's totally understandable! I don't look sick.

Also, I do what I can to mask symptoms, which doesn't help people understand what I'm going through either. On a day when I am having difficulty moving, I may support myself with a hand on the wall as I walk, but only if I think no one is looking. If I am teaching a class or having a conversation, sometimes I lose a word or stutter or say knee when I mean elbow. During these instances, I make a joke and we laugh it off. If I'm tired (and it shows), a little Eye Creme goes a long way. Sometimes, though, symptoms are hard to hide. Like when I am in the middle of a conversation and I forget what I was talking about...mid-sentence. Or when I can't remember a person's name that I definitely should remember. Or when I can't breathe simply because I walked from one room to the other or bent down to pick something up. But, it's all good. At least I don't look sick!

Now, I'm out and about a lot. Between teaching yoga classes, taking my son to school, doctor's appointments, visiting friends and family, I interact with a lot of people each day. Often, someone will ask: "how are you?" To me this question presents a dilemma. I don't want to lie, but I also don't want to unload on anyone with the multitude of bad things that are happening in my body at that particular moment. Do they really want to know? Are they asking to be polite? Either way, what I'm going through is no fun, so hearing about it can't be much fun either. However, I could talk about Lyme for hours. HOURS. So, listener beware! Asking a simple question like "how are you?" can unleash an hour-long depressing rant about the politics of this controversial disease, how I can't eat anything I want to eat and my fears about my children's future as they fight this disease. That's what's weighing on my heart right now, so I can't help myself! Hmmmm. Maybe we should think of a safe word. You know, so in case I ramble on and on and you just want me to shut up. Or how about you just make up some excuse to get away...as quickly as possible...like your house is on fire or you just saw the bat signal.

I've had Lyme for a long, long time, so my 'normal' is anything but. To me, though, it's life. I felt even half as bad as I do each day, I would think I was cured (forget the fact that there is no cure for Chronic Lyme!) Any relief from symptoms would be a tremendous gift. Ultimately, though, what we're working towards is the day when I don't look sick because...I'm not!Be a Fan

Dog Skin Problem - Six Main Reasons Your Dog Can't Stop Scratching

To contact us Click HERE
Your dog skin problem is driving you nuts! Your dog won't stop scratching, gnawing, licking, and biting. However, stop and think for a moment. If his behavior is driving you nuts, how must your poor dog be feeling?By identifying the reason for your dog's itching and scratching, you are one step closer to getting relief for him. Here are the six main reasons for your dog skin problem:
  1. Infectious - bacterial, fungal, and yeast are skin and coat pathogens. Fungi cause circular patches of hair loss that usually do not itch. Yeast infections cause greasy, and odor causing sores.
  2. Neurogenic - no medical reason for the dog skin problem. Incessant licking characterizes this dog skin problem which is basically, a nervous habit of licking and chewing. This is often brought on by dogs that arent getting the proper exercise or attention they need and they bite, chew, and lick themselves as a nervous energy outlet.
  3. Allergenic - an allergic reaction to numerous things; food ingredients, synthetic and natural fibers, medications and pharmaceutical products, plant material and even dust. All other causes must be ruled out before this diagnosis is used.
  4. Environmental - itching brought on by what the dog is exposed to in his environment; swimming, digging, romping through fields. If the dog is sensitive to grasses or gets scrapes and cut, the wound often stays moist, bacteria sets in and causes an infection. This is most often referred to as a "hot spot."
  5. Nutritional - due to imbalanced diet without proper nutrition. This dog skin problem is often caused by the owner feeding the dog an inferior dog food. Just because a brand of dog food states, "Complete and Balanced" doesn't mean it is a good source of nutrition for your dog. Owners will often opt for cheaper dog food and feel secure that they are feeding their dog a good diet because they fall for false advertising. Remember, false advertising is just as prevalent when it comes to pet products as it is in human products.
  6. Parasitic - fleas, ticks, chiggers, deer flies, and gnats are the most common parasites that cause your dog's skin problem. Repeated exposure to these parasites can cause sensitivity and eventually infection. Cheyletiella mites, often referred to as "walking dandruff" and Sarcoptic mites which are called scabies or red mange, are much more serious. These mites cause very intense itching and scratching, hair loss and inflamed skin.

'I wanted to talk about dying'

Osseo-Maple Grove Press
Last February, Maple Grove resident Sue Nelson felt she had hit rock bottom.

She was in constant pain that worsened daily and had been to every doctor and specialist she thought was possible, incurring above $300,000 in medical expenses.

"I laid in bed thinking 'this is it'. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't walk, sleep or function in daily life. There were no more doctors. No more tests. I wanted to talk about dying. I thought that is where the pain would lead me," Nelson said.

After all the doctors and multitude of tests, Nelson was left with no diagnosis and a life of consent pain.

"I wanted to talk about dying. I wanted to make peace with myself and make preparations. My mom was the first one willing to talk about my wishes and it was like admitting I was going to die," said Nelson. "I prayed I would die quickly or receive an answer as to why I was so sick. During our conversation, out of the blue, my mom mentioned Lyme disease."

Little would Nelson realize, the conversation about the possible end of her life would lead her to the discovery that would allow her to live her life again.

Nelson was diagnosed with Lyme and Bartonella disease in March 2005. The diagnosis and treatment, she explained with a smile, is letting her live her life again.

Although Nelson cannot determine the date she contracted the diseases, she started developing symptoms in August 2004. She did not experience the classic "bulls eye rash" associated with Lyme disease, which may have led to an earlier diagnosis. Symptoms began in the form of the feeling of pins and needles in her feet. "It was unusual, but nothing other than a minor annoyance," said Nelson. "I knew something was wrong, but it wasn't anything I felt I should see a doctor about."

In November 2004, existing symptoms had worsened, spreading through her body and additional symptoms appeared. Nelson decided it was time to visit a doctor when she could no longer sleep at night due to a resting heartbeat of 90-120 beats per minute. According to the American Heart Association, the average individual has a resting heart rate of 60 to 80 beats per minute. She was placed on high blood pressure medication, but symptoms continued to worsen and new symptoms continued to appear.

"I started having a consent buzzing feeling in my body," explained Nelson. "Eventually, I had fainting episodes, mini seizures and convulsions."

In addition to a general practitioner, Nelson visited a stream of specialists ranging from cardiologists to infectious disease specialists and had a multitude of tests performed. Nelson indicated that a test was completed for Lyme disease, but it had provided a false negative.

During one of her many clinic visits, Nelson was advised her problems stemmed from depression due to her age and circumstances.

"I was insulted, but I went along with the antidepressants with the hopes it would cure me. Everything continued to get worse," said Nelson. "I was so scared. By the time I had scheduled the multiple appointments and tests, I was numb up my left foot to my ankle. My right foot and right hand were numb along with the right side of my face. The usual sensations I had felt with my hand were gone. If I tried to pet the dog, I couldn't feel anything."

According to the Lyme Disease Foundation, Lyme disease symptoms can often imitate other diseases and can be misdiagnosed. Some individuals do not notice the early indicators of the disease, such as flu-like feelings of headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle aches, fatigue and a possible rash from the bite. Once early indicators of the infection disappear, the disease can disseminate to other organs. The LDF indicates Lyme disease can adversely affect many portions of the body, such as the brain, eyes, skin, heart, joints, liver, lungs, muscles, digestive system and spleen and can affect pregnancy.

As time progressed, Nelson made repeated visits to the emergency room. Her ability to walk was gone. She no longer could complete simple, daily functions such as changing her clothes, bathing or brushing her teeth. Husband, Mike, and daughter, Madelyn, assumed the role as her caregiver. Since she is self-employed, she was did not receive disability benefits and was unable to continue working.

Then Nelson found her answer.

As she discussed her illness and what appeared to be a fatal outcome with her mother on the cold winter day, her mother mentioned Lyme disease and its symptoms. The discussion lead to research on the Internet and the shocking discovery that a majority of the symptoms Nelson was experiencing were also found in Lyme disease patients.

"I couldn't find any Lyme disease doctors in Minnesota or Wisconsin to confirm what I felt was wrong with me," explained Nelson. A specialist was located in Missouri and Nelson, accompanied by her husband, set an appointment.

"At that point, I had to ride in a wheelchair and be carried by Mike. I could barely handle the plane ride due to the pain," said Nelson.

Once at the Missouri clinic, a Western Blot test was done and sent to the Center for Disease Control lab and a Lyme lab, IgeneX Inc., in Texas. Nelson had been advised that it was the most clinically accepted test available. The test came back positive and Nelson began antibiotic treatment immediately. Her doctor also diagnosed her with Bartonella based on clinical observation, which involved a review of pictures and Nelson's recounting of an episode of being bit by sand flies in March 2004 while vacationing in the Caribbean.

Nine months after the diagnosis of Lyme and Bartonella, Nelson continues to improve. She has resumed her business and continues to strive toward a complete recovery while dealing with lingering systems such as cold hands and feet, ringing in the ears and tiring more easily.

Although she is significantly improved, Nelson still requires ongoing medical treatment.

"I need to take several types of antibiotics to ensure that I totally wipe out all forms of the Lyme bacteria in my system. I also take a lot of supplements aimed at fighting Lyme disease," said Nelson.

According to Nelson, she also took an antibiotic called Rifampin that was used specifically to treat Bartonella. "How one responds to an antibiotic is also an excellent indicator of which type of diseases one has," said Nelson.

Along with the ongoing antibiotic treatment, she continues to have a phone consultation with her Lyme doctor every four to six months and yearly visits. She also continues to have regular lab work done at a local clinic, which is faxed to the Missouri physician, to ensure there are no negative side effects from the long-term antibiotic usage.

Upon looking back, Nelson feels that the diseases have changed her life.

"Mike, Madelyn and my mom came through for me and they proved to be my saviors. I was also very surprised at other family members and friends who were there for me and so wonderful. I now personally have much more awareness of others around me who have special needs," said Nelson. "I feel less concerned about the day-to-day stuff and know that it will all work out. I try to remember on a daily basis how far I have come and how lucky I am to be walking around and just doing the small stuff."

Study: Napoleon's Army Destroyed by Lice

Lice played a key role in Napoleon Bonaparte's disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, according to genetic research into the skeletal remains of the ill-fated army.

Napoleon marched into Russia in the summer of 1812, leading the largest army Europe had ever seen, some half million soldiers, toward Moscow.

The invasion was the French emperor's answer to tzar Alexander I's refusal of the Continental System, a system of economic preference and protection within Europe aimed to exclude British trade and reinforce the French economy at the expense of the other states.

Six months later, the Grande Armée was reduced to 25,000 men who retreated to Vilnius, Lithuania, in the freezing cold. Only 3,000 survived the war, weather and disease to continue the retreat. The dead were buried in mass graves.

One such grave, containing between 2,000 and 3,000 corpses, was discovered in 2001 in Vilnius during some construction work.

Analysis of the remains produced hard genetic evidence that louse-borne pathogens were a major factor in the French retreat from Russia, Didier Raoult, of the Université de la Méditerranée in Marseille, and colleagues reported in the January issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"We believe that louse-borne diseases caused much of the death of Napoleon's army," Raoult told Discovery News.

Human body lice transmit Borrelia recurrentis, Bartonella quintana and Rickettsia prowazekii, the agents of louse-borne relapsing fever, trench fever and epidemic typhus, respectively.

Raoult and colleagues analyzed two kilograms of earth from the mass grave containing bone fragments and remnants of clothing and identified body segments of five lice.

Three of them carried DNA from relapsing fever.

The scientists then analyzed dental pulp from 72 teeth, taken from the remains of 35 soldiers. The sequencing revealed DNA of Bartonella quintana in seven soldiers.

"We believe that these findings provide firm evidence that the soldiers had trench fever," wrote the researchers.

The team also detected the DNA of Rickettsia prowazekii in three other soldiers, indicating that Napoleon's army also suffered from epidemic typhus.

Overall, nearly one-third of Napoleon's soldiers buried in Vilnius were affected by louse-borne infectious diseases, the researchers concluded.

"This is very important and exciting research because it provides compelling physical evidence for the impact of louse-borne diseases on Grand Army troops during Napoleon's invasion of, and retreat from, Russia," Robert Peterson, an expert of insect ecology and agricultural and biological risk assessment at Montana State University, told Discovery News.

Fracking in Kansas pushes water permits to new high

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Applications for temporary water permits for oil and gas exploration in Kansas have reached a 30-year high thanks to new oil drilling in Kansas using horizontal hydraulic fracturing, a drilling method that relies on water. The Kansas Division of Water Resources received more than 600 applications for water permits for oil and gas exploration in 2011, the largest number for that type of application since the 1980s.Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy and SandRidge Energy are among companies securing land in Kansas, where they’ve begun drilling using horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which involves pumping water, sand and chemicals into the well to help oil and gas flow.SandRidge expects to have drill several wells in Kansas this year. Each completed well requires about 2.7 million gallons of water.source: http://www.greatbendpost.com/2012/01/23/fracking-in-kansas-pushes-water-permits-to-new-high/

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board will host Edward Cross, President of the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA), and Joe Spease, Sierra Club of Kansas, for a discussion about hydraulic fracturing.
The program, Fracking: An Environmental Debate, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 5, at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. It is free and open to the Public.
"Hydraulic fracturing has been in the news so much lately, from stories about earthquakes to oil independence to alternative energy sources. This program is extremely timely,” said Andrew Toth, Dole Institute Student Advisory Board coordinator. “This fascinating discussion will shed light on the truths and myths about hydraulic fracturing. With panelists both for and against fracking, it should be of interest to experts and laymen alike.”
Hydraulic fracturing is a process which allows companies to recover natural gas and oil from shale formations deep in the ground by injecting highly pressurized fluid to fracture source rocks. The environmental risks of this process are highly controversial.
Edward Cross serves as President of the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) where he oversees all KIOGA business activities and programs. Cross has served in this position since September 2003.He is responsible for public policy advocacy and interaction with external stakeholders including elected officials, regulators, government decision-makers, and community thought leaders.

Fracking can hurt property values of nearby homes with wells, study suggests

BY SEAN COCKERHAM

 — Property owners near shale gas wells are liable to suffer a major loss in value because of worries over water contamination, according to economists from Duke University and the nonprofit research organization Resources for the Future.Their study found Pennsylvania homeowners who use local groundwater for drinking lost up to 24 percent of their property value if they are within a mile and a quarter of a shale gas well.

...The study is among the first attempts to measure the impact on property owners of the shale gas boom sweeping the nation. It comes as the need for new regulations is being hotly debated and shale gas critics allege people are getting sick from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the process in which high-pressure water and chemicals are injected underground to free up the natural gas in shale rock....The Ohio State researchers found about a 4 percent drop in property value for households that rely on private well water within a mile of a shale gas well. The drop was bigger and lasted longer for more rural homes surrounded by farmland, according to the Ohio State researchers. They saw a dip of more than 7 percent in value.“We find evidence that households are negatively impacted by shale gas exploration activity, but this impact largely depends on the proximity and intensity of shale activity and diminishes over time as risk perceptions adjust following the (end) of exploration activity,” they found.

Jeep 'sold' to Cadillac via Twitter hack

Published February 19, 2013Associated Press

A Chrysler spokesman says someone hacked into the Jeep brand's twitter account Tuesday afternoon, making false Tweets for about an hour until the company that handles its social media regained control.
The move was similar to an incident involving the Burger King restaurant chain on Monday, although it's unclear if the two incidents are linked.
Hackers posted that the Jeep brand had been sold to Cadillac because employees had been caught using pills. They also posted that there would be no more Jeep production.
Chrysler spokesman Ed Garsten says the company's social media agency got help from Twitter to regain control of the account. He doesn't think the brand name was damaged by the Tweets because most people know it was a prank.

Jeep Twitter Hacked Into Cadillac (UPDATE: We Heard From The Alleged Hacker)

SOCIAL MEDIA

Yesterday Burger King turned into McDonalds. Today, Jeep has become Cadillac. It's a bad week to be on Twitter. In what appears to be something very similar to yesterday's Burger King hack, Jeep is now saying they were taken over by Cadillac. Looks like most of the tweets coming out of Jeep's new account are quite interesting. Jeep is gaining hundreds, if not thousands of followers from the hack, much like Burger King did yesterday. We're not sure who is behind it, but it is either the same people that hacked the BK account or some similar copycat that isn't quite as creative. The tweets also aren't flowing as quickly as they did yesterday, so maybe this one is already getting shut down. UPDATE: Jeep's Head of Jeep Brand Communications Todd Goyer told us "We're aware of the issue and are working to resolve it as quickly as possible."It appears that the Twitter might actually be getting back to normal and no longer running super wild. The Cadillac background has been removed and we haven't seen a tweet in nearly 20 minutes. It does still have the Caddy crest though.SEXPANDUPDATE 2: Our friends at Gizmodo noticed this one:source: http://jalopnik.com

The account's profile photo has been changed to the McDonald's logo, and the cover photo and background have been changed to images of McDonald's food. The account appears to have been taken over Monday morning, when hackers tweeted out "We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you."The hackers also clarified that "For the record, our password was not "whopper" or anything!"Burger King last seemed to be in control of the account on Sunday, and as of this writing, its Facebook and Google+ accounts are still under control. Burger King could not be reached for comment. The hackers claim to be a part of the LulzSec group, which since 2011 has gone after a number of high-profile targets including Sony and several government agencies.Based on a tweet retweeted by the account, it appears the group may have waited for Presidents Day to pull off the hack in order to catch the company on a day its employees may be not working.[Update 11:13 a.m. Feb. 18: Burger King's Twitter account has been suspended by the social network and is no longer visible.]source: http://www.latimes.com

Burger King Twitter Account Hacked

The Huffington Post  |  By Alana Horowitz
This is exactly why you don't give the Hamburglar your Twitter password...Someone apparently hacked Burger King's Twitter account on Monday and changed its photo to the McDonald's logo and name "McDonalds." The hacker then claimed Burger King was sold to McDonald's, and then posted a host of raunchy messages. The account's bio was also changed to: "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped =[ FREDOM IS FAILURE."The perpetrator referenced several internet hacker groups, including LulzSec, Anonymous and DFNTSC.About an hour after the wayward tweets began, the fast food chain's account was suspended. A company spokesman told the AP that they reached out to Twitter to have the account frozen.According to BuzzFeed, Burger King released the following statement:
It has come to our attention that the Twitter account of the BURGER KING® brand has been hacked. We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings. We apologize to our fans and followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics.

Donald Trump's Twitter Hacked, Raunchy Lil Wayne Lyrics Postedby Rebecca MacateeDonald Trump, Lil WayneIsaac Brekken/Getty Images, Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesDonald Trump has posted some strange things on Twitter. But Thursday, the Celebrity Apprentice star really surprised his 2 million followers when someone hacked his account and tweeted a raunchy Lil Wayne lyric."These hoes think they classy, well that's the class I'm skippen," the Trumpster (actually, his hacker) wrote, quoting a rap line from "Scream & Shout." Sadly,  Trump almost immediately deleted the tweet after it posted.Trump backtracks on threat to sue Macy's over "Dump Trump" campaign"My Twitter has been seriously hacked---and we are looking for the perpetrators," he wrote. He then took a dig at the social networking site, writing, "Twitter will soon be irrelevant if lowlifes are so easily able to hack into accounts."But by Friday morning, Trump seemed back to his old tricks, tweeting his fears of China "overtaking" the world and calling for the death penalty for Drew Peterson.source: http://www.eonline.com

Find the McDonald's/Burger King hack funny? Just imagine full-blown corporate cyberwar

Summary: At the time, I thought what happened to Burger King on Twitter yesterday was pretty funny. But do we need to think about what behavior we're condoning?By Matt Baxter-Reynolds for Post-PC Developments Last weekend I took a DNA sample using using the 23andMe service. I went onto a website, gave them my credit card details, and a test kit turned up a couple of days later. I spat in the tube (sorry!), put it on a plane (well, DHL did that for me) and soon they'll put it in a machine and sequence my genome.Where that gets all crazy future sci-fi is that once that's done I can download a copy of my genome, on a small handheld computer, pretty much wherever on the planet I am. I could be in line to get a coffee on the way to work. And if I want to understand something more, I can tap into essentially the totality of human knowledge to help me understand what I'm actually seeing. Finally, this all comes at a cost that is essentially free. When I was a kid I used to read a lot of sci-fi. All of that could have been lifted from the sort of cyberpunk books I used to read 20 years ago.And that got me to thinking about the McDonald's/Burger King hack that happened yesterday. Although we know that particular hack was the result of a hacker/some hackers exploiting some weakness, it shows the ability for individuals to co-opt a marketing channel, which is something that would be very hard to do with "traditional" marketing. If McDonald's rented a billboard, it would be hard in real life to corrupt that arrangement so that the placed advert was actually for Burger King. But in a digital world, that becomes much easier. If McDonald's rented digital billboard, hackers could easily do what they did yesterday with Twitter -- i.e. exploit some weakness to replace the McDonald's advert with a Burger King advert. I've been in McDonald's where all the menus were electronic display panels -- why not hack into those and replace those with messages about where the nearest Burger King is?If you were writing a cyberpunk novel, rather than having some ad hoc collective of hackers doing it "for the lulz", you'd possibly have the marketing team at Burger King employing freelance hackers to corrupt McDonald's advertising intentionally for their own gain. (Lawyers -- please relax at this point! I'm not suggesting that McDonald's or Burger King, or any of your clients would actually do this, I'm just playing with an idea that's 100% science fiction.)That idea could have been lifted straight out of the opening chapters of Snow Crash.

Change

This idea seems ridiculous, but could we could end up in a situation where corporate executives are intentionally acting outside of legality and morality in a sort of "war" with competitors to take advantage of the each others advertising spend and spin it to their own advantage? I present two points:Firstly, sometimes corporate executives act outside of legal and generally accepted moral boundaries. (Again, lawyers! I'm not suggesting that your clients would do this.)Secondly, it appeared to me that everyone thought that what happened to Burger King yesterday was amusing. I must admit, I thought it was funny -- it's part of basic human psychology to get an emotional buzz out of schadenfreude, but this morning I'm wondering whether it actually was funny.I did a very quick, non-scientific analysis of Twitter sentiment about the hack this morning. I looked up synonyms for "funny", and synonyms for "bad", and used search.twitter.com to find tweets that referenced both sets. I didn't find one example of people lamenting what had happened to Burger King. Every tweet that I read was full-on schadenfreude. Some of this is down to the fact that Twitter is naturally a medium that skews towards humour. The likely reason for this is that humour acts in our society as a type of "social grease". If you're out and about with a group of people that you know well, a "good night" is one where you're laughing, joking and teasing throughout. Humour is part of what we use to get to know each other. Twitter's ultra-short burst message design makes humour more important. A quick and witty tweet that conveys humour is more likely to be picked up and propagated in the network than one that is negative. Here's one that I particularly liked from yesterday, because of it's knowing nod towards computer security:

You have to admit that this is pretty funny.

Problem?

OK, but is what happened to Burger King actually funny, or are we just not thinking about what we're doing? Most human social behaviour has been under development and refinement for hundreds of years. A friend of mine said to me recently "we're taught to behave everywhere except the internet, which is now everywhere". Were we all correct to give oxygen to the hacker/hackers who did this? (For example, I retweeted the tweet I've reproduced above yesterday without thinking about. I read it, thought it was clever and funny, and hit "retweet".)Not wishing to be a killjoy -- I present these a "devil's advocate" argument purely as a disinterested discussion point, but providing feedback to those involved that what they did as funny is rather a "win" for whoever did it. If we all condemned what happened and didn't play the game, it would make a repeat performance less likely. We might also want to reflect that it could have been our spouse working in Burger King's marketing department yesterday desperately trying to find some way of contacting Twitter to get the account knocked offline. (An activity that's essentially impossible unless you happen to personally know someone senior within Twitter.) And someone could well have lost their job. Regardless of what happened, that's a rubbish day.Another point is that it actually worked. The Burger King account managed to grab an additional 25,000 followers in the couple of hours the hack was active. At the time of writing, it was up about another 25,000. If someone targcyeted you with doubling your Twitter followers from 60,000 to 120,000-odd, if a hacker told you he/she had a plan, it'd be a little bumpy but that it could be done in a day if you had a little cash -- well, how's your moral compass?read more at http://www.zdnet.com

1 day ago via web · powered by @socialdittoIt should be noted that not all hackers are related to Anonymous, and some really hate Anonymous. In this case, it seems that Rustle League was in it for the “lulz.” There might be cases in the future, however, where rival hacker collectives take things to serious new levels by posting personal information on those involved in each group. For hackers veiled in anonymity, that would be the worst possible thing.source: http://www.webpronews.com
