We always knew it was a possibility, but it doesn't make it any easier to take. Last week, we found out that my husband, Brian, also has Lyme Disease, as well as a co-infection called Bartonella. Interestingly, my doctor and I do not think I have Bartonella. The only co-infection I have is Babesia, as far as we can tell. If that is true, there is a possibility that Brian had Lyme even before we met.
Brian and I have often discussed the possibility that he had Lyme before we met. He had symptoms throughout his life...chronic childhood illness, food sensitivities, anxiety, texture sensitivities, memory loss, OCD, Psoriasis and so on. He also could have contracted it from me. Lyme bacteria is a spirochete and therefore related to Syphilis, so it can be sexually-transmitted. This is highly controversial, but most Lymies I speak with say everyone in their family has been diagnosed. So, either: 1. It was transmitted sexually between the couple and then to the children in utero or....what many Lyme doctors believe...2. Most people have Lyme, but symptoms are not always prevalent due to a healthy lifestyle and diet, and a lack of triggers, like vaccines, anesthesia, surgery, pregnancies and other traumatic events. We may never know if he got it from me or had it prior, but either way, he has it and we need to face it.
It was hard news to receive, but Brian handled it very well; better than me, actually. At least we have doctor's in place and are pretty knowledgeable now about the disease, since I was diagnosed in May and the kids were diagnosed in June. And thankfully, he isn't very symptomatic. As long as we avoid things that can trigger symptoms, like the ones I mentioned above, and he can stick to a strict diet (wheat/dairy/sugar-free), he should stay that way. Since he isn't very symptomatic, he is going to start with Acupuncture, Chinese Herbaceuticals, the Lyme diet and natural treatments recommended by the RN who performed the test.
Brian has been so great through this nightmare...diagnosis, treatment, helping out more around the house and with the kids, helping me think positive and not give up. I know many families who are torn apart by this disease, usually because one spouse doesn't believe it...or doesn't want to believe it. Brian has been open and supportive from the beginning and that has been such a gift. Now we will support each other through this and hopefully I can be just as supportive to him as he's been to me.
Lastly, we know we are not alone on this journey. We have each other and we have the best friends and family around. Thank you to everyone who has supported us through this trying time. We are forever grateful to you! We hope you will take the time to educate yourself about this disease. It is projected that hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps millions, are walking around with Lyme, but have yet to be diagnosed. We pray that you are never faced with this disease. Please be diligent in checking for ticks every time you come in from the outside. They are in every state in the United States (no matter what your doctor is telling you; just ask a veterinarian!) and many other countries as well. Be well, my friends!Be a Fan
